How to choose a first instrument

Age, hands, personality and the music they love: how we help children and adults pick their first instrument.

A ukulele, a violin, a small keyboard, drumsticks and a recorder laid out on a wooden floor in morning light.

The best first instrument is the one you want to play. Still, a few things make the start easier.

Start with the music they love

A child who loves pop songs will be happy at the piano or guitar; one who dances to every beat may be a drummer.

Think about hands and size

Very young children often start on piano or violin, which come in sizes for little hands.

Try before you buy

Our open house and trial lessons are made for this. Try three; one will click.
